Youth Writing Camps

Summer camps on the MSU campus in Bozeman for kids and teens entering grades 3–12, led by licensed educators and YWP Teacher Consultants.

Full for 2026 — Waitlist Open Grades 5–8 & 9–12

Youth Writing Camp

A multi-day "unschooled" writing workshop for youth entering grades 5–8 and 9–12. Campers write in multiple genres and share their writing within a supportive community of peers and licensed educators — the Yellowstone Writing Project teacher consultants. The program includes writing on the move, writing games, and guidance and feedback throughout the writing process, led by YWP teachers and junior counselors.

Resident campers are housed on the MSU campus and eat all meals in Rendezvous Dining Hall or from local vendors. Residence halls provide bed linens, pillows, blankets, and towels.

What to Bring

Residents

  • Backpack and water bottle
  • Closed-toe shoes for all classes
  • Swimsuit and towel, rain jacket, warm jacket, sunscreen
  • Small fan (optional — limited supply at hall front desk)
  • A little spending money for snacks

Commuters

  • Lunch, snacks, and a water bottle
  • Your favorite writing utensil

Camp Showcase

Join your camper and the YWP team for the Camp Showcase on the MSU campus to celebrate the writers and their work from the week. Date, time, and location TBD.

Refunds & Cancellations

Cancel by Friday, July 3, 2026 for a full refund minus a $50 administrative fee. Full refunds are issued if YWP cancels a camp for any reason.

Grades 3–4

Young Writer's Camp

A four-day writing workshop for kids entering grades 3–4. Campers are immersed in creativity and engage in activities that encourage writing across genres, writing in community, and building up writing stamina. Licensed educators — our YWP teacher consultants — provide feedback, encouragement, and a few of their favorite writing tricks. Campers also have the opportunity to publish their work in a group anthology, and the camp closes with a writing showcase.

International Youth Silent Film Festival

YWP also celebrates student storytelling beyond the written page through an international youth silent film competition, coordinated by our team alongside our writing camps.
